InTown: In their own words

InTown: In their own words

The Sr. High and Jr. High students of High-Life recently spent a week serving in Huntsville. This local mission trip was an excellent opportunity to see, experience and actually contribute to the work that is being done by some of Southwood’s ministry partners like Lincoln Village Preservation Corporation, Lincoln Academy and The Village Church. Below you will see pictures and a brief response to the trip from Anna Gandy, a Sr. High-Life student who is a senior at Grissom High School.

How did your view of the poor and needy change while we were on InTown?
We realized that the poor and needy were closer to home than we might have imagined.  They’re not just people on the street in New York or some big city or in Guatemala or Africa.

Why would you encourage other students to go on the InTown Mission Project?
I would encourage students to attend Intown because it is a nice way to see what you can do in your own community by stepping into people’s lives and making a difference.
How do you think you will continue to serve?
I’d love to continue to get involved with the kids that are attending Lincoln Academy or just the kids in general in that neighborhood because it’s nice to have an investment in their lives that’s more long term instead of isolated, short-term projects.

How does the message of grace, that God moves towards broken people, impact your view of missions?
With the view of grace, it helps you realize that you’re a broken person just as these people are broken, so it stops you from becoming self-righteous about what you’re doing.  It’s not the work that you’re doing, it’s the work that God’s doing through you.
