Current Opportunities
- Tutoring Opportunities in Lincoln Village
This year we have 3 tutoring options. Tutoring does not begin until after Labor Day. However, we would like to have several training sessions prior to startup. So, please volunteer as soon as possible.
Elementary School: Martin Luther King - approx. 30 minutes once a week during lunch hours
Middle School: Chapman Middle School - approx. 30 minutes once a week during lunch hours
After School Hours: The LINC (Village Church) - 5 - 6pm once a week - Children’s Small Group Leader
Lead a small group of kids on Sunday mornings this summer. FLIPT is Southwood's Summer Sunday School for 1st-4th grade completed. No teaching or upfront presence required. Great way to invest in the lives of kids for the gospel in a fun and energetic environment!
- Special Needs Ministry
You will be with one child and a worker and will be assisting in walking the child around as well as playing and talking with the child
- Peru Missions Trip
When: July 9-18, 2010
Cost: $2,650 per person (airfare, food, lodging, project costs)
Deadline: March 1, 2010 (application + $200 deposit)

Missions Ministry seeks bilingual members for verbal and written translation between Spanish and English for Southwood mission trips to Mexico.
- Sanctuary Blanket Care
Gather sanctuary blankets, clean and return to sanctuary.
- Build a web site for Southwood Kids!
Using iWeb for Mac, build a web page for Southwood's Children's Ministry that will be linked to the church's web site. Work with Children's Ministry Director and Administrative Assistant for content and for input on layout and design.
- Clean Food Bank at Lincoln Village
Help keep the Food Bank at Lincoln Village clean. The Food Bank is open on the second Tuesday morning of each month. It needs to be cleaned the week prior to its opening. Duties include vacuuming, mopping, etc.
- Cook for The LINC after school program
Prepare and cook an evening meal for 40 people (tutors, students, staff) at The Village Church kitchen.
- Tutor a child at the Linc after school program
Tutor a child at the LINC after school program at The Village Church.
- Tutor a child at Lincoln Elementary
Tutor a child at Lincoln Elementary in North Huntsville during lunch time (10:50 am - 12:15 pm). Further screening may be required.
- Be with PreK & K children during Kids Worship
Being a loving adult presence among PreK & K children helping create a learning environment conducive to fun and learning. Your's is a support role to the teacher and song leader. No preparation necessary but you must be a member of Southwood.
- Decorate nursery bulletin board
In coordination with input from the nursery direction, change out the nursery bulletin board in a creative and fun way.
- Care for Special Needs kids on Sundays
Sit with and care for special needs children during either the Sunday School hour or late worship hour.
- Use puppets to minister
Join Southwood's puppet ministry team "No Strings Attached" for rehearsals and performances in children's classrooms and beyond as a creative ministry venue to teach children about Christ and walking with Him. We are looking for adults and youth.
- Substitute lead a small group of children
Be available and ready to be a substitute small group leader on a Sunday morning when regular leaders are sick or out of town. For a given Sunday, small group material will be sent to you by email.
- Teach the Bible creatively to kids
Creatively teach the Bible to children in one of our large group environments during the Sunday School hour. Curriculum or teaching resources provided. This is not your regular classroom setting. Creative communication and thinking outside the box a must for reaching and teaching kids. Great opportunity to use gifts and abilities God has given in the arts.
- Support worship leaders in Children’s Ministry
These are opportunities for youth to assist adults in leading worship on Sunday mornings for children at the first part of the Sunday School hour. Support the adult leader by providing on stage, up front vocals and motions to assist kids in worship. Must be comfortable on stage, able to sing and represent Christ before kids.
- Lead worship among children through singing
During the beginning of the Sunday School hour, lead children in worship through songs. Collaborate with Children's Ministry staff and coordinators for song selections and resourcing. In 3 of our 4 ministry environments, words are projected on screens and there is support with sound systems and mics. Must be comfortable on stage and able to bring children to God in worship through song and word. Ask about which age groups are available.
Also able and willing to lead a small group of supporting singers (youth) who would join you. - Shoot video
Capture video footage of various slices of Southwood's Children's Ministry for website. Film occasional footage to help enhance a children's lesson or teaching series.
Serving Groups
- Southwood Servers – these women serve side by side in the kitchen during church-wide dinners, receptions, and other events where food is served. Contact Sharon Dutcher, .
- Flower Guild – This ministry provides flowers for our worship service each Sunday. No prior training is necessary to serve on the Flower Guild. You will be paired with an experienced member to learn how to arrange the sanctuary flowers that enhance our worship each week. Contact Jane Bise, 539-6541.
- Assimilation – This important ministry ensures that every woman feels like her church is a church home. A new members’ dinner is held to welcome new members to the church, and assistance is offered in helping new members find their niche and meet new friends. Contact Sharon Dutcher, .
- Music – We need women for our women’s Bible study, Morning Edition, who will play instruments and lead in singing. Contact Debbie Jones, 489-4904.
- Bible Study – Morning Edition Bible study needs women who are willing to help with a variety of tasks such as setting up the coffee time, planning luncheons, coordinating the nursery, and handling various administrative tasks. Contact Debbie Jones, 489-4904.
- Lincoln Village – A variety of service opportunities exists at Lincoln Village including tutoring, painting, stocking the food pantry. Contact Karen Taylor
- Decorating – Whether it is making centerpieces for an event, Bible study, or redoing a Sunday School room, women with decorating skills are always needed. Contact Karen Parks, 882-3085, Ext. 110.
- College Student Goodie Boxes – Each December, college students preparing for exams appreciate receiving a box of homemade goodies. This event is usually held immediately after Thanksgiving and requires organization, good cooks, and eager workers. Contact Anne Thompson, 880-1483.
- New Mothers Ministry – We welcome all new babies at Southwood by visiting their mothers and delivering a gift for their new baby. If you would like to help welcome these babies, please contact Mary Schick.
- Meals Ministry – Southwood provides meals to our members who have had a baby, been in the hospital, or experienced a death in the immediate family. Willing hands of good cooks are always needed to serve in this important ministry. Contact Will Spink, 882-3085, Ext.
- Anna Ministry — This ministry is to our elderly and widowed women. A fall luncheon and a Valentine dinner are held each year to honor these dear ladies. Monthly get-togethers are also planned. Contact Karen Parks, 882-3085, Ext. 110.
- Homebound Ministry – Men and women who can seldom come to church appreciate seeing this group come to visit. If you can serve occasionally or on a regular basis, your service would be a blessing. Contact Melissa Baginski, 325-4569.
