Session Update

The Session is excited to announce the hiring of Robert Blevins to be our Director of Community Development. Robert has been working with our denomination’s Mission to North America agency to equip churches around the country for mercy ministry and community development. Please be praying for him and his wife, Denine, as they will be transitioning to Huntsville at the first of January, Lord willing. In the meantime, Sarah Niemitz is continuing to work part-time in this role that she has served in so faithfully for the past several years while she also transitions to spending more time at home with three young children. Thank God (and thank Sarah as well!) for her service to our congregation and community, and rejoice that she and her family will remain a part of our Southwood community even as she leaves the church staff.

At our congregational meeting on September 24, we updated the congregation on some encouraging ministry opportunities we continue to have in our church, our community, and our world. We also shared a financial update to inform the congregation that while God continues to meet our needs day by day, we do remain daily dependent upon him as always and are at this point tracking about $65K behind our giving to this point in the 2016 calendar year. While this is not an immediate financial crisis, we are praying for that trend to change as we finish this year and head into next year with a full staff and busy ministry calendar. As our Finance Committee and Session prayerfully consider how we can best steward our financial and material resources for the sake of his kingdom, please join us in asking God’s direction in using your own resources to support the worship and work of the Church.

Finally, take note of two significant events coming at the end of this month and participate with us. HeyDay is Sunday, October 22, and is a great chance to invite friends and neighbors to enjoy an afternoon together on our grounds. Southwood will host a Presbytery-wide Reformation Service at 6:00pm on Sunday, October 29. This will be a great chance to celebrate our rich biblical heritage on the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 Theses as well as to fellowship with brothers and sisters from other area churches.
