Help Me Teach the Bible: Marty Machowski on Teaching Theology to Kids

Ever feel ill-equipped to teach the Bible to your children?  Are you overwhelmed, like you don’t have a clue where to begin? Unsure how to make it relevant to your children’s daily lives?  Are you just in need of a little inspiration? The good news is you are not alone.  Many of us know the stories of the Bible and we want to share them with our children, but teaching it all can seem a bit daunting.  Well, this week we have the perfect tool, a podcast, to help and encourage you!!

Listen here as Nancy Guthrie interviews author Marty Machowski on teaching theology to kids.  Marty says it’s this simple: Don’t break it up by Testaments Old and New…just teach them one story - the story of Jesus.

I laughed when I heard this on the podcast, but I really related to Marty saying, “I was the same as parents out there - they got this big fat study Bible sitting on their table and they look at that thing, they look over at their kids and they go, ‘It ain’t happenin’ man. I do NOT know what I am doing…and…where ON EARTH do I begin?!’  And every time, we begin with Jesus.  And we help kids see how the whole Old Testament points forward to [Jesus]. Every king points to the King of Kings. They failed, He didn’t fail.  Every sacrifice points forward to Jesus.  Every prophet points forward to Jesus.  Every priest looks forward to the Great High Priest.”

I absolutely LOVE how Marty ties the stories in the Old Testament directly to Jesus, who at that time had not even been born yet.  And he goes on to make it relevant to our children today.  He describes how at one point everyone in Israel knew God was with them. And today, God is with us.  All of a sudden, this story becomes familiar to us, to our children who learned at Christmastime that Emmanuel means “God with us.” All of a sudden, teaching theology to your children doesn’t seem so intimidating…afterall it’s just one story, Jesus’ story.

Marty does a fantastic job making both the Old and New Testaments relevant to children.  And he does it in a very captivating way. So, take some time to listen to this podcast, and check out some of the resources mentioned in the discussion.  I’ll have a couple of them available for you to look through this Sunday.  Just see me or stop by the table outside the Nursery Hallway!
