Session Update

Future Staffing

The Session is excited about the opportunities for kingdom ministry before us as a church. As we have prayed and planned, we want to build a pastoral team that works with our senior pastor to “equip the saints” for ministry. This means we particularly desire to continue the engagement and ownership within the church that the entire congregation has shown this past year. Please pray that God would continue to make us into a body of Christ where we all use our gifts for his kingdom. Pray also that he would send us the men He has called to shepherd and equip us for our mission. We are currently seeking three pastors: Shepherding Pastor, Pastor of Youth and Families, and Pastor of Children and Families.

How are we seeking these pastors?
There are 3 pastoral positions to be filled and 2 search committees, reporting to the Session. The Shepherding Pastor Committee is Will Spink (Chair), Ruling Elder Alan Judge, Deacon Tim Schlichter, Libby Stanfield, and Whitney Cooper. The Youth and Families Pastor Committee is Ruling Elder George Mayer (Chair), Deacon Brian Cost, Cindy Howard, Kim Watkins, and Jonathan Pope. This committee also receives Children and Families Pastor inquiries.

What is the order of priority for these 3 positions?
We believe they are all high priorities. We are searching proactively for Shepherding Pastor and Youth and Families Pastor at first, with the Children and Families pastor to follow. However, there is no presumption that God will provide these men in that order, and we will seek to be wise stewards as the searches develop.

What does “and Families” mean in the titles?
This indicates our commitment to these pastors shepherding not only youth or children but also parents and families. This is not necessarily new or a change from previous pastors but is rather an intentional future emphasis. It indicates a commitment to our God-given responsibility to shepherd the next generation and our conviction that we do that best through shepherding their parents as well. It would be better described as strategic kingdom priority (intentional investment in families) than as a change in philosophy.

How will the Children and Families Pastor position be filled?
Currently, the search committee chaired by George Mayer will receive applications and respond to inquiries. We believe it may be beneficial for them to continue serving after they find the Youth and Families Pastor until they also find the Children and Families Pastor, but that will be determined as the process develops.

How are Niña (children’s ministry) and Winnie (youth ministry) being helped in the meantime?
We are looking to hire a part-time nursery coordinator, and the admin staff along with volunteers are covering other children’s ministry responsibilities since Nancy McCreight’s departure. Winnie has engaged adult leaders and elders in helping direct the youth ministry, and we are looking for a male intern for this summer.

Would the congregation vote on these pastors?
The plan is for men initially to be called by the Session as assistant pastors, so there would not be a congregational vote at that time. If the Session recommends them to the congregation for a vote to become associate pastors, it would likely be at a later date after the congregation has had opportunity to get to know the pastors.

What are plans for non-ordained staffing?
We expect there will be some additional staffing (e.g. part-time nursery director). Such positions are possible but not assumed until needs are assessed during this search process.

What are the budgetary implications?
In the 2016 budget, we have 2 of these 3 pastoral positions as well as other vacant staff positions. Exact dollar amounts would only be known when we find the men we would like to call and plan for 2017. We will monitor 2016 income and expenses as we make these plans, so consistent giving now is helpful in this process.
